Hiking Trip - Lamartine Ras El Metn Hike - Metn District
LAMARTINE RAS EL METN HIKE
“From this place, God’s gift to perceive His Work can be captured through a glimpse.” — Alphonse de Lamartine (1790–1869)
Join us for an unforgettable hike through Ras el Metn and the breathtaking Lamartine Valley, inspired by the French poet and politician Alphonse de Lamartine, who found profound inspiration in Lebanon’s natural beauty.
Ras el Metn, a village deeply dedicated to preserving the valley’s charm, plays a key role in eco-tourism and sustainability. This hike is organized in collaboration with the municipality — with special thanks to President Mr. Marwan Salha, Deputy Mr. Raja Aboureslan, and the AFDC Ras el Metn unit led by Mr. Issam Makarem, for their tireless work in protecting the region’s environment.
Ras el Metn is known for its pine nuts, olives, grapes, figs, and apricots, and for its historical sites: ancient tombs carved into cliffs, natural grottos, and the old spring Nabaa Ain El Marj (1472). We’ll also visit the abandoned monastery Deir Mar Youhana in Shehlen, offering panoramic views from Bhamdoun to Ktaleh.
Two hiking levels are available:
• Level 3 (Easy): A mainly flat and downhill path (280m descent) through pine forests, passing old houses, bridges, and Nabeh el Delbi, Beirut’s main water source.
• Level 5 (Challenging): A more demanding route leading uphill to Deir Mar Youhana, with stunning views before rejoining the group by the river.
Both groups will meet for a relaxing picnic lunch by the riverbank at Ain Sheikh Hassan Halawi, another natural freshwater source. Please bring your own lunch.
After the hike, we’ll head to the historic Serail of Ras el Metn, built in 1775 by the Lamaayeen princes. Despite past damages, its courtyard and bell tower still stand proudly, echoing the village’s rich history.
Come discover the magic of Ras el Metn — where poetry, history, and nature meet!
