Hiking Trip - Deir Mimas - Marjayoun District

  • Deir Mimas. The name is derived by Saint Mamas, a shepherd that used to preach Christianity in the third century accompanied by his lion protector. In the middle ages, a monastery was built in his honor on the top of a hill. With time and ages, people started to come and live next to this convent creating a small village that was later on called Deir Mimas.

In 2006, during the most recent war, the convent was destroyed and rebuilt directly after the war ended.

Deir Mimas stands on a hill overlooking the Litani River and the medieval Beaufort Castle to the west, and the summits of Mount Hermon to the east.

The village comprises two water mills, 500 years old olive trees and ancient bridges which, combined together create a wonderful trail to be explored. It also includes churches and sanctuaries for different religions and communities.

We will all start together from the convent, where the officials of the village will tell us more about the village’s history. We will then, get separated into two levels.

Level 3 – will make a tour in the village’s streets, the surroundings and the convent as well as the piazza where all locals gather during their free time. The officials of the town will accompany us for the whole tour to tell us all the information that we need to know about their beautiful village. We will then head to a local restaurant where the region’s specialty will be served.

Level 6 – will start from the village’s entrance heading to the highest hill of the area overlooking the Lebanese-Palestinian frontiers, a panoramic view of the South and many villages located directly on the borders. We will then take a downhill trail leading us to the Convent of St Mamas then inside the village to see the old streets of the village and the main piazza. Streets will lead us to the restaurant where the other group would be waiting for us to have lunch all together.

Before we leave you will have the chance to buy some homemade products prepared by the locals.
