Sunset Hike - Baadaran Sunset Hike & Wine Tasting - Chouf District

  • The trail takes us this time to another town, in one of the best sites of ecotourism in Lebanon; the Shouf region.
This time, we will be heading to El Khreibe which is part of the transition zone of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, the largest reserve in Lebanon.

First of all, we cannot but start by thanking the Shouf Reserve for its care and attention to the nearby villages, especially by exploring and establishing new trails, thanks to the local guides of the villages who we can never thank enough for the time, effort, and the local knowledge that they share.

Our hike will be segregated into levels as usual, Levels 2, 4, and 6.

Level 2 will be a relatively easier 5 Km hike, with slight uphills and downhills. That does not mean though, that the hike loses any of its charms. All the levels will start together, till we all reach the Khreibe water source.

From there, the Level 2 will continue to see the olive orchards and the local olive presses in the area, as well as some of the old houses and ruins in the area. After that, we will head to the bus that will take us to the guesthouse in the village to wait for the other levels to arrive.

Level 4 (9 Km) and level 6 (13 Km) will continue from the first source together to reach an old castle that can be traced to the Jumblat family, one of the most prominent families of the region. This one of many typical old castles in the region, where stone chimneys are a trademark.

After that, both levels will continue to the Baadaran airport, an old inactive airport at the moment. From the neighboring Balayet area, one can see one of the most breathtaking views of the Shouf region. A splendid panorama that spans in all 360 degrees.

From the airport, the Level 4 will continue by bus to the guesthouse and meet level 2, while the hard level will continue on a trail amid oak trees and hike towards the guesthouse in Khreibe. On the way, we will stop by a water source called Nabaa-Al-Aadas (Or the source of the lentils).

After all levels reach the guesthouse, we will all sit together and have a homemade Lebanese lunch prepared by the guesthouse.

When our lunch is over, we will head back to Beirut by bus, but we will stop before at a shop that sells one of the most well-known traditional sweets almost exclusive to the Shouf region; El Lawziye. (Almond Based)
